As stated in the National Curriculum, fluency, reasoning and problem solving lie at the heart of our maths curriculum. By working closely with St. Helens TSA and Maths Hub North West 3, our curriculum has evolved to equip all pupils with the necessary basic skills needed to demonstrate mastery of the curriculum applied through a wide range of problem solving challenges. We follow the White Rose Schemes of Learning. 

At Holy Family we aim to bring maths to life across the curriculum, equipping pupils with a maths knowledge and understanding that makes sense to them. Our teaching of maths follows the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach so that our pupils gain a secure understanding during their learning. 

During the concrete stage, pupils have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives such as cubes, Numicon or counters to help them understand what they are doing.

At the pictorial stage, pupils then build on their concrete experience by using pictorial representations, for example, using or drawing a number line, drawing a picture to help solve a problem or using pictorial representations of the concrete materials used previously. 

With the foundations firmly laid in the concrete and pictorial stages, pupils are then able to move to an abstract approach using numbers and key concepts with confidence. In turn, we will see improved maths standards at our school and a culture where pupils and staff are excited by maths and eager to share their maths WOW moments.

This will be achieved in many ways, including; through paired and group work as well as individual challenges; taking maths outside the classroom; making links to the outside world; use of Number Fun songs, interactive Number Fun activities and weekly Times Tables activities.
